NDSU goes 1-2 at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. -- North Dakota State (1-3) won its first match of the season, 19-16 over The Citadel (2-5) in the final match of the Virginia Duals Friday.

The Bison, who lost earlier in the day to Penn and Virginia, got off to a fast start against The Citadel as 125-pounder Mike Meger picked up four points with his 15-6 major decision over Mike Fenton.

The Citadel was then able to get victories at 133 and 141 pounds giving the Bulldogs the lead at 6-4. NDSU took the lead back with victories by Gabe Mooney and Adam Aho, giving NDSU a 10-6 lead. Mooney won his first match of the Virginia Duals by defeating Billy Bullwinkel 7-2 at 149 pounds. Aho picked up his second consecutive victory at 157 pounds when he beat Chris Humphries 11-7.

The Citadel was up 13-10 until 184 pounds when sophomore Matt Wetterling pinned John Dickerson in the third period, giving NDSU a 16-13 lead. Wetterling’s win was his 18th of the season and his 13th pin, both team highs.

Mark Thompson tied the match at 16 with a 3-0 decision over NDSU’s Jacob Bryce at 197 pounds.

The match came down to the heavyweight bout where NDSU’s Mike Maresh defeated John Buck 3-2, giving the Bison the 19-16 victory.
